Assessing Export Opportunity of Malaysia’s Palm Oil Products: Using Shift-Share Technique

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify the export opportunities of Malaysia’s palm oil products and to distinguish the main countries to which there are potentials for export. Based on need for tropical weather for palm oil cultivation, only countries which are located in the vicinity of and on the equator are capable producing palm oil products. This gives Malaysia a competitive advantage with regard to bioregion. This study is based on secondary data, gathered from an online database from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) at mpob.gov.my. The export data of over a hundred and fifty destination countries, four products, for a period of twelve years were collected. The shift-share technique was used as a methodological tool to analyze the obtained export data. The results of the analysis based on selected products namely, palm oil, palm kernel oil, oleo-chemical products, and palm kernel cake, and the destination countries were carried out to clarify and highlight the export opportunities as well as to forecast and estimate future exports.
